About Vein Disease - Approximately 30 million adults in the United States may suffer from treatable, symptomatic, superficial venous insufficiency. Many of these patients as well as their primary care or specialty physicians may not be fully aware of the advances made in the treatment of venous insufficiency in the last 5-10 years. Since 2000, vein stripping has been replaced by endovenous closure procedures as the preferred treatment of patients with symptoms related to saphenous vein and other superficial venous insufficiency. Many patients once thought to have untreatable venous problems may now be excellent candidates for endovenous closure.

Treatments- Dr. Magnant considers the venous system as a whole rather than as individual parts. The deep system of veins in the muscular compartments of the legs communicates with the superficial system of veins in the skin and fatty tissue, through a network of communicating or perforating veins which act as bridges between the two systems. Most patients who present with anything more than small spider veins in the thighs will undergo ultrasound evaluation of their lower extremity venous system as part of their comprehensive venous workup.

Conservative - Compression stockings are the first line of treatment of patients with varicose veins and other signs and symptoms of venous insufficiency.

SCLEROTHERAPY- Sclerotherapy literally means “scar” (sclero)”treatment” (therapy) and is used to treat spider veins and smaller varicose veins. injection sclerotherapy is the most common and accepted treatment of spider veins and most small varicose veins. Laser sclerotherapy is effective in the treatment of very superficial, fine spider veins.

MICROPHLEBECTOMY -  In the treatment of varicose veins, microphlebectomy (removal of veins through very small incisions) is the most common “surgical” procedure performed.

ENDOVENOUS ABLATION (EVLA) -  A relatively new procedure (RF approved by the FDA in 1999, Laser 2001) is performed with ultrasound guidance and under local anesthesia, this process is a gentler, minimally invasive approach to the treatment of the underlying insufficient veins causing the varicose veins or other presentation of venous insufficiency such as swelling, skin discoloration, bleeding or ulceration.
